The mesh insert on the left matches the pieces of mesh I've wrapped around the edge of the page on the right. First I painted the spread purple and used a piece of chicken wire and paint to imprint a larger pattern on the spread. Then I ripped off part of the left page to create a flap with a ragged edge and attached the mesh to the flap.

Intermediate Techniques

The techniques in this chapter build on the skills you gathered in Chapter 2. Not only will you learn specific techniques, but you'll start to come up with your own ideas for ways to implement all those fun looks you're imagining. But don't be nervous: These techniques aren't difficult either.

The painting techniques in this chapter will add sophistication to your pages. Transparent glazes allow the book's text to show through. Layering a few glazes adds an artsy effect. Texturing makes the difference between a flat page and a page with depth.

Cutting shadowboxes and niches provide impact. Let's face it: If you want to change a two-dimensional surface, isn't the best way to make it three-dimensional? Cut or collage your altered book cover to really draw your viewers into your book. Make your book's first impression a good one.
